Review: LOVELY VICIOUS by Sara Wolf

Seventeen-year-old Isis Blake hasn’t fallen in love in three years, nine weeks, and five days, and after what happened last time, she intends to keep it that way. Since then she’s lost eighty-five pounds, gotten four streaks of purple in her hair, and moved to the Buttcrack-of-Nowhere Ohio to help her mom escape a bad relationship.

All the girls in her new school want one thing – Jack Hunter, the Ice Prince of East Summit High. Hot as an Armani ad, smart enough to get into Yale, and colder than the Arctic, Jack Hunter’s never gone out with anyone. Sure, people have seen him downtown with beautiful women, but he’s never given high school girls the time of day. Until Isis punches him in the face.

Jack’s met his match. Suddenly everything is a game.

The goal: Make the other beg for mercy.

The game board: East Summit High.

The reward: Something neither of them expected.

Isis Blake is determined not to fall in love. She's gotten hurt in the past (she knows EXACTLY how many days ago that was) and she doesn't intend to let it happen again. She's at a new school, in a new town, with a new image. Jack Hunter, the most infamous guy at East Summit High, is the epitome of everything she wants to avoid.

"1. Don't talk about love. 2. Don't think about love. 3. Thinking and talking about love leads to Love, which is the enemy. Do not consort with the enemy." -Isis Blake's to-do list

Isis Blake is used to negative attention. At her last school, she was bullied for being overweight. She has since lost eighty-five pounds, put purple streaks in her hair, and an invisible armor around her heart. Yet, the atrocities she has faced have left her with deep emotional scars. She was hurt so badly that she can't even speak her aggressor's name or hear it without cringing. He is referred to only as "nameless" by her. When her only friend at East Summit, Kayla, is embarrassed and hurt by none other than Jack Hunter, Isis makes it her mission to make him pay. She is going to right this wrong so that Kayla isn't hurt as deeply as she was. This means war.

"She was probably a trusting, naive girl before him, like a daisy. And then he came, and pulled her petals off one by one forcing her to surround herself with thorns to survive." - Jack

Oh, how I want to be friends with Isis Blake! She is the kind of girl who has your back. She's your friend that always has just the right comeback at just the right moment. Clever, snarky comments that turn into hilarious banter. Isis is the most loyal friend you could ask for. She's also the friend that you can ask anything of - including breaking and entering - and she won't say no! She doesn't bat an eyelash when she marches right into a classroom to ream out a student in front of the entire class - including the teacher. There are some serious underlying turmoil and self-esteem issues but she is strong and caring. She navigates the high school flawlessly - analyzing every move the students and faculty make. Jack is an enigma that she can't figure out. Isis prides herself on reading people but she can't seem to get a handle on Jack and what makes him tick. Only so that she can ruin him, of course.

"Everyone is simple. No one bothers to hide themselves well. They put on perfume and makeup and designer clothes, but it's a superficial shield that I can read." - Isis

Jack Hunter is known as the Ice Prince. Every girl in the school wants to date him and he turns every single one of them down - and not gently. Just walking through the school he leaves crying girls in his wake.

"I'm surprised you manage to get your head off your pillow in the mornings with an ego like that. Not everything with a vagina likes you, dipshit." -Isis

Yet, once Isis starts scheming and investigating she discovers that there is more than meets the eye with Jack. He has secrets and she won't stop until she knows those secrets so she can use them against him. Isis reminds me ofVeronica Mars (my absolute favorite television show ever) meets I Know What you Did Last Summer so you know I was grinning from ear to ear as I read this book!

"I rifle through the rest of the wallet - five bucks cash, some change, a library card because he's a nerd, some receipts for chicken and milk and measuring tape. Pretty basic high school kid stuff, but surprisingly tame coming from the wallet of a guy who talks like an Einstein clone and looks like an underwear ad. I was expecting loads of condoms and maybe a line of molly." - Isis

Pretty soon, their little war is the talk of the school. While they each vow to stop at nothing to annihilate the other, they discover that the fighting brings out a passion in both of them.

"You smell good," I say. "And you're fun to pick on. And I like your mom. You're smart. Kind of dumb, but also kind of smart. I had fun. With the war. And the kiss. And the date. And you called me beautiful and it was nice. So even if we never battle again, even if you hate me forever for saying I like you, thank you. Thank you a lot." -Isis

I can't say enough good things about this book. Seriously, it was one of the best books I have read this year. FABULOUS! BRILLIANT! WONDERFUL! AMAZING! 5 STARS! GO BUY THIS BOOK AND READ IT... then go bug Sara Wolf to write the next book because yes there is a cliffhanger (gasp) and I need that next book!!!
