Review: BEFORE WE FALL by Courtney Cole

Sometimes, one dark moment is all it takes to turn your world black...

For 24-year old Dominic Kinkaide, that moment took place on the night of his high school graduation. One dark incident changed him forever. He's a hardened actor now, famous in the eyes of the world, but tortured in his own. He doesn't care about much of anything, except for losing himself in the roles that he plays.

23-year old Jacey Vincent doesn't realize how much her father's indifference has affected her. She is proof that sometimes it isn't one specific moment that wrecks a person, but rather it's an absence of moments. She's like a bird with a broken wing-strong yet fragile, as she tries to float through life, finding acceptance in the arms of random guys, one after the other... to fill the void that her father left in her.

Until she meets Dominic.

After jaded Dominic and strong-willed Jacey are thrown together, his secret and her issues create a dark and damaged energy that will soon turn their attraction to each other into an explosive storm.

Even though when the clouds have cleared and the dust has settled, both of them are almost obliterated... they've learned a priceless lesson.

Sometimes, before we fall... we fly

The difference between a good book and a great book is, a great book draws your emotions out of you. The story is told in such a way that you connect with the characters and feel the pain that they are struggling with rather than be told how they feel. Courtney Cole’s collection of Beautifully Broken Series is a prime example of this. She has the ability to take a character that is shattered and broken and turn them around into a strong independent person who has rebuilt their life. Not only is she able to do this with one character but she has the ability to do it with both characters as they find one another are build a life together. Before We Fall is no different than the previous books in the series. It is much darker than the others but I think it is my favorite one so far. I completely devoured this book. I felt their vulnerability as they deal with life. I laughed when they were carefree. I cried when Dominic’s past is revealed. When it ended I had a knot in my stomach. I was emotionally drained when I finished. I didn’t want it to be over. I loved every minute of it. In my opinion each book in the series gets better and better.

Like the previous books both of the main characters are troubled. Dominic and Jacey are both head strong and stubborn and I feel in love with both of them. I felt every emotions as if they were my own and I was cheering for them as they overcome the past and learn to live again. They both have gone through so much in their short lives and they deserve happiness.

Dominic is dark and broken. He is in a seriously dark place in his life. He is a hot actor who everyone wants a piece of but no one really knows. After a horrific event after graduation he has closed himself off from everyone around him including his family. He is no longer capable of having a traditional relationship and turns to the darker sex scenes for relief. Dom believes he is to blame for that tragic night. He will not let himself overcome the events and believes everyone wants something from him and there are no longer good people out there. He has convinced himself that he damages everything he touches and when Jacey gets close he trues his best to push her away but deep down he doesn’t want to be the person he has become anymore. Jacey has the ability to makes his walls come down and crumble. It isn’t an easy process but she has been there herself and somehow knows exactly what he needs. I love the way their relationship develops as they fight for their happily ever after.

I absolutely adore Jacey. She is strong and sassy but has severe daddy issues. In the past she has always believed the good in people and has a way of choosing the wrong men. Jacey has learned the hard way that is it close to impossible to change someone. When her brother and Maddy move away she is given the opportunity to start over, a fresh start, and a chance to get her life together. I loved how real her character is. Most people experience something similar in their lives and it made the story so much more believable. I was cheering for her to overcome her insecurities. Little by little she is able to rebuild her life. When her world collides with Dominic she knows she shouldn’t be attracted to him that he is no good for her but she instantly feels a deep connection. Jacey has a way of seeing past Dominic’s dark side and seeing the good person he truly is but rarely shows. It is impossible not to be drawn to her. She has the ability to be light and carefree and bring out the good in people. I know why Dominic couldn’t stay away. She has a way of bringing out the best in people.

I can’t say enough how much I love this series, each book gets better and better. These aren’t your typical cute and sweet love stories. They are dark and gritty. I love the way Courtney Cole can take a broken character who is essentially lost but finds their way when their soul mate comes into their life. Her characters are so real and relatable. They such you in. Each book in the series can be read as a standalone but I think you are missing out if you don’t read them all. I hope there are more to come!
