Special Halloween Treasure Trove

Here at Lives and Breathes Book Blog we are cheerleaders for all things Indie and would like to help Indie authors receive as much exposure as possible. One way we plan to help that along is through a new weekly segment called Thursday’s Treasure Trove. In the Trove, we will be digging up some Hidden Gems and Buried Treasures. The Hidden Gem will be a book that one of our bloggers has read and loved, yet has seen little fanfare. The Buried Treasure will be a book that was popular when it was released, at least six months ago, and has seen little action as of late. If you have a favorite book that qualifies for either category, let us know and maybe you will see it on the Trove post in the future. Happy digging!!

This week we chose some of our favorite spooky paranormal treats.

Halloween Hidden Gem

The Experiment In Terror Series by Karina Halle

Discovered by

"With all the vampire, werewolf and faerie books out there, it's easy to become numb to all things supernatural. The antidote? Darkhouse introduces two real and unforgettable characters, Perry Palomino & Dex Foray, amateur ghost hunters who are "attractive, relatable and oddly heroic," "flawed but loveable," "slightly crazy" and just the most endearing pair to ever tackle the paranormal...just don't call them normal.

Darkhouse is a thrilling and sexy new take on concepts like Supernatural and The X-Files, bringing a breath of fresh air to a genre that has been inundated with the dead."

Lea Says:

There was no question as to what I would select for my Halloween Hidden Gem. The Experiment In Terror series is my favorite of any other paranormal or horror I have ever read. Ever. I picked up the first book “Darkhouse” last October, and ended up breezing through everything in the series that had been released up until that point, within a week. And now I impatiently wait for the new ones to come, desperate to check in with two of my most cherished characters and get the bejesus scared out of me.

Normally, while reading, I do not scare easily. Oh, sure, some books are so suspenseful that I get super antsy. But with these books—despite the paranormal aspect that I can normally brush off since I do not believe in ghosts or anything of the sort—actually freak me out. When I am reading one of these babies, I am an edgy mess. Every sound I hear, every cold draft I feel, and every movement in my peripheral, has me literally on the edge of my seat, ready to pounce on anyone who dares creep up on me. And yeah, I will be leaving the hall light on when I go to sleep.

In the first book we meet our kick ass heroine, Perry, and the sexy, rapist mustache sporting, Dex. Oh, no? He doesn’t sound hot? Yeah, well don’t let the creepy facial hair deter you. This guy is one of the most cocky, smart ass, dirty minded and filthy mouthed heroes in all the land. And oh, how I love him, madly.

Once the two meet they quickly begin a working relationship, putting on a YouTube show where they go from place to place, looking into reports of supernatural activity. Yup, ghosts and stuff. Only, this isn’t Ghost Hunters, or that other show with the douchebag who has the stupid hair. Nope, these two are the real deal, and have abilities to see stuff that make me want to hide under my bed.

Every book takes you on a different mission, introduces more insanity. The sexual tension and angst levels kick up a notch in each one, too. I personally think the scariest book is “Dead Sky Morning” where Perry and Dex are staked out on a deserted, and presumably haunted, island. As usual, there is Jack Daniels and shenanigan’s a plenty, and even some super dirty tent action. The most heartbreaking of the series being “The Lying Season,” brought tears to my eyes even though it had me ecstatic right beforehand. Or maybe it’s “On Demon Wings,” because I spent equal amounts of time crying for Perry and pining for Dex, but I also wanted to smack her around a bit. “Into the Hollow” had me an anxious mess, as well…and it’s also where we get a glimpse of Dex in a different light. The one where I was thinking, he needs to borrow Jules’s wallet from Pulp Fiction, cause he is a bad mother f—ker. And he only gets more badass which each installment after.

Most of the books are told from Perry’s POV, but there are some Dex novellas and even this summer's release, “Come Alive,” was full-on Dex. His mind is a terrible thing to waste and I am glad Karina felt the same, because seeing the world through his eyes is a trip, though it might make you feel the need to shower after.

Though a lot of people have read Halle’s Artists trilogy, I would think this series would be her most popular. Not only are these books hilarious, but the author has a way of reeling you in so completely you feel like you are there, experiencing every little thing with them: fear, lust, love, and yes, sometimes hate. The development of their characters and their relationship actually moves at what some may call a slow pace, but I think it's perfect. It's more like real life than most romances I read, you know except for the ghosts and the big foot and stuff. Each book gets deeper and deeper into their pasts, personalities, and partnership with each other all while the adventures they embark on seem to get more terrifying.

It’s a rollercoaster ride I wish would never end, however, as they say, all good things must, and we are nearing this series finale. Thank God, there will be some spin-off action coming, as well. Lucky for you, the entire series is on sale for the month of November. Each book is under a dollar, with the exception of the first book, cause that one is always FREE.

Halloween Buried Treasure

The Dark Light Series by S.L. Jennings

Rediscovered by

Love. Sex. Magic.

Before her 20th birthday, Gabriella was pretty much clueless about all three. In love with her best guy friend since the age of 14 and too crass and intimidating for most of the male population of Colorado Springs, love and good sex were virtually a myth.

And then there’s magic. Freakin’ magic. There’s no way that legend could have a place in her less than exciting life. So why after twenty years of utter obscurity do her adopted parents hit her with the ton of bricks that is her true identity? And how the heck is she supposed to accept all this and become what she was truly created to be?

Lucky for Gabs, sexy as sin Dorian is more than equipped to help her embrace these new revelations. And while everything about him feels oh so good, she soon learns that there’s more behind his crystal blue eyes, chiseled body and exotic beauty. Something dark, menacing and downright unnatural. Yet Gabs is in way too deep to even try to turn away from him now.

Dark Light, Book 1 of the Dark Light Series, is the raw, emotional story of a young woman’s journey of self-discovery in a world that was not meant for her. And her scorching hot, lip-biting addiction for the man she can’t deny, no matter the cost.

Teri Beth) In the spirit of Halloween, Kathy and I picked the Dark Light series by S.L. Jennings, a paranormal series, which currently consists of "Dark Light" and "The Dark Prince," with a novella and book three on the way.

I remember when Dark Light was released; Dorian was the talk of the town! It started a series that has a strong, spunky female lead and a mysterious and sexy male lead. It’s full of love, sex, and magic, which is exactly how it’s described. As a paranormal reader, this story stands out in my mind. It’s different from most; one, due to the whole Light vs. Dark aspect, but also due to the steam factor. Gabriella and Dorian’s sexual chemistry is off the charts!

Kathy) I was late to the Dark Light party I think! I didn't read them until both books were out....Which was good for me because I needed that double dose back to back!  Most paranormal books that I read are fun and quirky, but this was a sexy, hot, paranormal and I was in love from page 1!  Gabi was  your average girl next door and Dorian was just mysterious and exciting!

From Teri Beth's review:

“There was this book that keep getting recommended to me and there was this guy, who I was told would ruin me. The book just happened to be Dark Light and the guy just happened to be Dorian. I had to find out what all the hype was about, so I read Dark Light.

I liked it.

And Dorian definitely ruined me.”

“Now, Dorian and Gabi together was just HOT. This book is very sexy and steamy and I loved it!”

“I liked that this was a different type of paranormal read. The Dark vs. Light is an interesting story line.”

Kathy) That's why I liked it so much too, Teri Beth! It was a very different paranormal read.  So many paranormal books feature the cookie cutter stories.  This one had a lot of suspense and sexual tension that I don't find in the other paranormal books I read.  Plus it had one heck of a cliffhanger!  That's why I was so happy that the Dark Prince was already out when I read the series! I could jump right into the next book.  I don't know what I would've done if I had to sit on that cliffhanger for long!

Teri Beth) It wasn’t easy Kathy but it wasn’t long before I got to jump into The Dark Prince, which for me blew Dark Light out of the water, it was so, so good. It picked up right where Dark Light left us and didn’t stop. TDP really delves in to the paranormal aspect of the story and kept me on the edge of my seat as well as kept my emotions on edge! Gabi was even more awesome in this installment and I ended up loving Dorian even more!

From Teri Beth's review:

“It was a roller coaster of emotions with a few awesome twists and turns.”

“I loved how the story progressed and the emotions it evoked in me. I went from happy at times to furious, sad, disappointed or even surprised. I loved the roller coaster!”

“S.L. Jennings creates a wonderful paranormal story full of magic and romance!”

Kathy)  I love that we got more details in the Dark Prince!  Once Gabi was filled in on the situation we could really grasp the gravity of the issues facing Dorian and Gabi.  This only made The Dark Prince that much more intense and passionate!  I was pulled in even more!  Now we are getting a Dark Light novella called “Nikolai” and I cannot wait!  Nikolai was every bit as charming and mysterious at Damon and he deserves his own story!

Teri Beth) I completely agree Kathy! I can’t wait for anything new with this paranormal series!
