PHENOMENAL X by MICHELLE A. VALENTINE, Reviewed by Julie

PHENOMENAL X
By Michelle Valentine

Michelle's books never cease to amaze me and she really pulled it off again with this one. I always love a good ‘bad boy’ and X was just what I needed!!

Anna's father ruled her, planned her life right down to the detail without once considering what she actually wanted. Anna basically felt it was ‘his way or the highway’ so she took the highway and left her home in Portland. On the plane, she meets the hot and sexy X, and, oh my, what a man he is!! He knows what he wants and that’s Anna, in his bed for the night.

“I could do things to your body that most women only dream about while reading their dirty romance novels, and I promise you’d fucking enjoy it.” – X
Enough said with that statement, I think I was drooling, and Anna was left quite speechless. She’s very inexperienced and has never been spoken to that way before. Though he’s crude and to the point, she does find herself drawn to him. Who wouldn’t be?

X certainly lives up to his name as one phenomenal wrestler, loved by everyone, especially the women!! He’s never had to work to get a woman but deep down he’s so broken, has secrets and a past he’s trying to forget. My heart just broke for him and what he had to endure but that made me love his character even more.

“There’s darkness inside me that no one should have to experience, and that’s what I’m trying to protect you from.” - X

Now that Anna has escaped ‘captivity’ so to speak, she plans to live with her aunt and cousin while she tries to figure out how to start living her life the way she wants to for a change. She doesn't expect to hear from X again, but having literally run off the plane at his indecent proposal, she forgot her cell phone. Despite his plans to get her for the night, she’s not like his groupies at all, which just ups the ante on the challenge she presents.

“You’re my addiction.” – X

X realizes more and more how different she is from other women, and eventually talks her into being his friend. Well, we all know how well that usually works out—NOT AT ALL!! He hires her to work for him and off to Atlanta they go.

“If we smash these fucking friendship rules there’s no going back. Once I have you-that’s, it, you’re mine. I won’t allow another man to take what’s mine.” – X

As she is pulled into his world of wrestling, she sees that it’s not as easy as it seems. There’s jealousy from women wanting him and there’s jealousy from his competitors. They certainly don’t make life easy on her and that really drew me in and kept my interest throughout the entire book, watching as all these rivals attempt to come between them, and try their best to keep them apart.

Once his past is revealed—believe me it was not what I was expecting—Anna finds herself wanting to be more than ‘friends only’  but can she handle his world? As the story unfolds, he finds he will stop at nothing to keep her safe, even if it means it could destroy everything they have worked so hard for; his career and their future.

“You’re the one, Anna. The dream I’ve always been chasing. You make me feel whole. I’m addicted to your light.” – X

I love the chemistry X and Anna have and even though I seem to want X all to myself, I was really pulling for them to get past his demons and be able to be together. The characters held my interest throughout the entire book and I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next. Michelle’s writing is so in-depth; it will pull you in and make you feel like you’re right there with them. I give this 5 stars and only hope I don’t have to wait too long to get more because Michelle, I may be hunting you down for more X!!

Kathy's Week in Review

What I read this week:

Veiled Innocence
by Ella Frank
What a roller coaster of a ride!  This book had my mouth hanging open and my mind working overtime.  Addison was such a brazen and bold character. She surprised me at every turn.  Half the time I had to reread her scenes because I just could not believe how unabashed she was.  Grayson had no idea what was in store for him when she walked into his classroom.  Grayson knew that a student/teacher relationship was wrong and he really did try his best to resist Addison.  That's pretty hard to do when you have a sexy, stalker vixen as a female student, offering herself to you at every turn.

Veiled Innocence is told in alternating chapters of past and present tense.  In the past tense we see Addison and Grayson's romance unfold from the beginning.  In the present we find Addison committed to a mental institution, reasons unknown. I loved the timing of release of information in this book.  Just as we learn a bit of pertinent information in the past sequence we see its importance laid out in the present.  At the forefront of this novel is not only a forbidden romance, but also a mystery.

I've loved Ella Franks' other books - for the humor, the romance, and the sexiness.  Yet, Veiled Innocence brought her to a whole new level and showed her brilliance.  This was a definite page turner that kept me up at all hours reading.  The writing was fabulous and the ending was perfect.  5++ Stars for this amazing novel!

Broken Wings
 by Erika Ashby
I thoroughly enjoyed the touching and sweet novel.  Lynsie is living the dream with her husband and military pilot, Lincoln.  Lynsie wants everyone to experience the love she has so she makes it her mission to find a woman for their best friend, Dax.  When tragedy strikes Lynsie and Dax must depend on each other to survive their heartache.

The writing really makes you feel the emotions of each of the characters.  I was immersed in the novel from the very first page and felt every emotion right along with Lynsie, Lincoln, and Dax.  This is a book that will make your heart swell with tears and laughter.   Although its hard to think about characters moving on after such intense heartache, the progression of the novel felt natural and loving.

This is my first Erika Ashby novel but it will definitely not be the last.  I'm looking forward to many more by this talented author.  5 Sweet Stars for Broken Wings!  Fans of Searching for Tomorrow by Kathryn McNeill Crane will enjoy this novel.
